Types of Exercise

You can classify exercises as the following types:

  • Aerobic Exercise: Aerobic exercises will improve your oxygen consumption and generally includes larger amounts of muscle groups. They are generally more rhythmic and repetitive. By doing these exercises you will be able to increase blood flow to your muscle and tissues significantly.
    Common examples of aerobic exercises are: Running, Jogging, Walking, Swimming and Cycling.
  • Anaerobic Exercise: Anaerobic exercise include smaller portion of your body with high intensity for a shorter period of time. It is not as rhythmic as aerobic exercise. Generally, anaerobic exercises are performed for building strong muscles and increase overall physical strength.
    Common examples of anaerobic exercises are: Heavy weight lifting, Sprinting.
  • Strength building exercises: These kinds of exercises are specially designed to increase your strength. This includes increase of strength in your muscles, bones, tendon and ligaments.
    There is no specific example of strength building exercises. Generally it is included as part of a bigger program like in a training session for athletes (i.e: training sessions for gymnasts)or you can customize it for you.
  • Exercises for Flexibility: These kinds of exercises involve mainly our joints and the muscle areas related to the joints. You can call them "free hand exercises" also. With the increase of our ages flexibility decreases. But, doing these free hand exercises regularly only for 10 - 15 minutes you can easily make your joints and body more flexible.
    Common examples of flexibility exercises are: Stretching.
